How To Diagnose Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
At Compass Pain and Wellness, diagnosing CTS begins with a thorough history and physical examination, followed by diagnostic testing, when needed. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for developing an effective treatment plan and preventing further complications.

Physical Examination: A detailed physical exam will include tests like Tinel’s Sign—tapping over the median nerve to see if it elicits tingling; Phalen’s Maneuver—holding the wrist in flexion to see if it reproduces symptoms; and Durkan’s Test—applying direct pressure on the carpal tunnel to see if it provokes symptoms.
Diagnostic Studies: Nerve conduction studies (NCS) can be used to measure the speed of electrical signals in the median nerve; slowed signals suggest CTS [2]. Electromyography (EMG) may be used to determine muscle damage due to chronic nerve compression. Ultrasound and MRI may be used to visualize nerve swelling and structural abnormalities [3].
